Faith and Politics (March 2025)

In the world of politics, evangelicals are a subset. So much of the conversation about Christian voters, political participation, and partisan beliefs seem to ignore the idea that in the world of evangelism, politics is a subset - and a small one at that. It has proven easy to confuse the form and function of a political administration with the form and function of the Church. For example, it seems undo pressure is placed on Trump's cabinet to either: affirm and protect Christian principles that align with conservative viewpoints and way-of-life, or to be the force of "love and justice" that align with liberal viewpoints and way-of-life. The question though is: what is the correct lens through which we engage and interact with politics? Surely we do not do nothing. But we certainly shouldn't place our hope or expectation in politics driving Christian principles, either. I think the answer is found in scripture, and can be summarized as follows:

Government is whole-heartedly necessary and important, but unable to ultimately save anybody from anything.
